Danish director Nikolaj Arcel will join a select band of film-makers, including the Austrian Michael Haneke and Dutchman George Sluizer, who have remade their own movies in the English language - Arcel is to direct the fantasy Island of Lost Souls for Universal Pictures. The film is based on Arcel's 2007 Danish film De fortabte sjaeles o, which was a huge hit in the Scandinavian country. It centres on a teenager living in a provincial town who finds herself battling evil when her brother is possessed by the spirit of a 18th-century magician. Christina Applegate is fighting breast cancer, her spokesman has confirmed. The 36-year-old actor, best known for her role as the combative Veronica Corningstone opposite Will Ferrell in Anchorman, is having treatment after being diagnosed with an early form of the disease. Her spokesman, Ame Van Iden, said: "Benefiting from early detection through a doctor-ordered MRI, the cancer is not life-threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."Another day, another comic book adaptation: Walt Disney has bought the rights to Monster Attack Network, a 2007 graphic novel written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman with art by Nima Sorat about a crack rescue squad who protect people living on a South Pacific island from monsters emerging from the sea. The good news is that Nathan Fillion, excellent in both the sci-fi TV series Firefly and the movie spin-off Serenity, is being considered for the lead role in a comedy which is said to be similar in tone to Men in Black. No director is yet attached.
